My name is Michele and I am a small batch yarn dyer based in Midwest. Misfit Yarns started in 2007 with handspun and hand dyed yarns and has evolved into commercial yarns hand dyed in small batches with professional acid dyes. I also dye silk scarves from various dye sources, including acid dyes and natural dyes. I’m happy to bring my creations and more than a decade of yarn dyeing experience to your yarn stash. Thanks for choosing Misfit Yarns!

Misfit Yarns is hand dyed in small batches of 2-4 skeins per batch. Therefore, the colorways may not necessarily match the photo in the listing, but steps are taken for consistent as possible colorways. Every attempt is made for those dye lots to match, but due to the nature of hand dyed yarn, there will still be some variations in these skeins. Speckled colorways will have the most variation. Sometimes the dye has a mind of its own! For best results, please buy enough of what you need for each project. For larger projects, it is strongly recommended to alternate the skeins to reduce any unwanted color pooling. If you need more than what's listed, please place a custom order and I will dye those skeins in the same batch.
Please also be aware that computer monitors colors may reflect a difference in colorways.
Mild bleeding is quite common with hand dyed yarns, especially for some semi-solids, speckled skeins and fluorescents (Violet Sky for example) . While I make every attempt to minimize the bleeding in my skeins, dye particles can still be trapped in the skeins and wash out in the water. To be safe and especially if you are combining the yarn with lighter colored yarn, give your yarn a good rinse in a warm bath without agitation for 30 minutes. This may take a couple of rinses. If for some reason this does not solve the problem, soak your yarn for 15 minutes and then steam your skein in a pot not used for food with a glug of vinegar for 30 minutes and let it cool. Don't agitate the yarn, even if it is superwash. This should fix the bleeding. If you still have issues, please reach out to me. Use caution with the fluorescents like Violet Sky when combining with lighter colors. These tend to bleed more.
Crocking is when the dye rubs off the yarn and onto your skin. This happens with darker and more vivid colors, such as semi-solids. This does not mean the dye hasn't been set properly; it's just a reaction that the dye molecules have with the pH of the skin. You can read more about the science behind it here: https://dunkelgrun.com/fiber-science-1/. Unfortunately, there isn't anything I can do about crocking. Be sure to give your yarn and garment a rinse to remove any excess dye.
Wash your yarn or finished garments in cool water with a wool wash such as Soak. Do not use Woolite - it is too harsh for woolens. Lay flat to dry.
Winding services are available free of charge. Please indicate in the buyer notes that you would like your skein wound. Note there are no returns on wound skeins.
